Gang violence is a serious problem in California and New York City, and no one is immune
from the impact that gangs and youth violence can have on a community. Today the gangs and the aspects of the violence
they attract, draw young people from all walks of life, socio-economic backgrounds, races and ethnic groups.
As a parent, educator, member of law enforcement, youth or concerned community member, you can help prevent further
gang violence by learning what a gang is, what the signs of gang involvement and gang activity are and what you can do to
stem future gang violence.
'Gang Free School Zones."
The Legislation amends New York State Penal Law and: Defines criminal street gang and membership in such, criminal street
gang activity, and school grounds; makes recruitment on school grounds punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison; and requires
posting of "gang free school zone" signs around the more than 6,400 schools throughout New York State. According to Assemblyman Peter Rivera, "We are here to say that if you are evil enough to threaten
the life of a child, if you are evil enough to interfere with their education, and if you are evil enough to place in danger
